Aims:
1. To encourage students to reflect on their own way of living.
2. To encourage students to pursue wisdom critically from the philosophies of Laozi and Zhuangzi.
Objectives:
1. To introduce students to Laozi and Zhuangzi's philosophies of life.
2. To provide a comparison between Laozi's philosophy of life and Zhuangzi's philosophy of life.
Subject Description:
This subject introduces students to Laozi and Zhuangzi's philosophies of life. Through studying
representative pieces from the text of Dao De Jing and Zhuangzi, the students will be encouraged to
seek understanding of the wisdom and the contemporary significance of Laozi and Zhuangzi's works.
Students will also be encouraged to think critically and arrive at their own conclusions about the
relevant issues in philosophy of life.

Coursework will consist of a mid-term test, tutorial presentation and either a tutorial assignment or a
short paper. The examination will be taken in essay form.

IV. Zhangzi's Philosopy of Life
A. The Dao of Zhangzi
B. The Equal Status of All Things (万物齐一)
C. The Connection Between Others and Oneself (通人我) and the Unity of Death and Life
(一死生)
D. Simplifying One's Heart-Mind (心斋) and Meditative Forgetfulness (坐忘)

Teaching Methods/Approach to Learning:
There will be two hours of lecturing per week. The third hour will be used for tutorial sessions
where discussions of relevant texts and student presentations will occur.
