Lessons 69&70 Reading
Lesson objectives:
Get students to grasp the whole contents of the play: How Mathilde borrowed and lost the necklace.
Deal with the words: diamond / valuable , etc.
Lead students to appreciate literature.
Teaching procedure;
Pre-reading
About the writer.
Show a portrait of the writer it the students and ask them three questions: Who's the writer of the play (Guy de Maupassant.) What's his nationality (farnce.) Do you know about his works (Yes. My uncle Yu Le/The diamond necklace) And have you ever read one of his works or ever known about his writing style (Yes./No./His writing style is direct and simple with attention to realistic detail. And he has a fine use of irony.)
About palys
The teacher asks Ss to say something they know about a play/ drama. (Every play should introduce its time, site ad characters first. And put in stage directions while necessary. And they often use present tense..)
Lead-in
Show a necklace and ask a question to lead to the topic. The teacher may say: Look! What's this (It's a necklace.) In fact , it's a chain which ruined a woman's life. Now let's find how it destroyed Mathilde's life.
While-reading
Scene 1:
1. Encourage Ss to find the site, time and characters of scene. Site: A park in Paris time: 1807 Characters: Mathilde and Jeanne.
2. Ask the students to enjoy the first scene of the play with the help of computer, and then do some exercises about it. The teacher may ask: Did Jeanne recognize Mathilde (No, she did't.) Why didn't Jeanne recognize Mathild (Because Mathilde looked older than her age.) What mad Mathilde look older then shi really was (Ten years of hard work, very little food, only a cold house to live in, and never a moment's rest.) What caused all these misfortune (The diamond necklace.)
Scene 2:
1.Encourage Ss to find the site, time and characters of this scene. Site: The home of Mathilde and Pierre Loisel Time: 1860 Characters: Mathilde and Pierre Loisel
2.Ask the students to enjoy the second of the play with the help of Video.
3.Questions for understanding
Ask Ss the following questions: 1.Why was Mathilde worried (She hadn't got an evening dress for the ball.)2. How much did her dress cost (Over 400 francs.) 3. What else did she want to wear (She wanted to wear jewellery.) 4.What did Pierre suggest (To wear a flower instead.) 5.What did they decide to do (To borrow some jewellery from a friend-Jeanne.)
4.Performance
Give the students a few minutes to practise the dialogue between wife and husband in pairs. Then ask several pairs to come to the front and act it out.(Stage property needed :a briefcase, an invitation card, and a flower)
5. Topic for discussion
If Pierre hadn't receive the invitation, what would their life been like Would Pierre have turned leader of his office Would their have love been permanent Please say as many possibilities as you can. Then report your discussion to the whole class. (four students in a group).
Scene 3:
Encourage Ss to find the site, time and characters of this scene.
I saw a lovely diamond necklace with a big red stone in the centre.
